Eph. 5:19 Speak to one another with psalms, hymns and spiritual songs. Sing and make music in your heart to the Lord,
1Cor. 14:26 … When you come together, everyone has a hymn, or a word of instruction, a revelation, a tongue or an interpretation. All of these must be done for the strengthening of the church.
Col. 3:16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom, and as you sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God.

Who is it that sings?

Group #1: THOSE WHO LOVE TO SING

… Your breath becomes the breath of God …

Group #2: THOSE WHO DON’T LIKE TO SING

Theresa of Avila: God I don’t love you right now … and I don’t want to love you …
but I want to want to love you.

Is. 38:18 For the grave cannot praise you, death cannot sing your praise …

Ps. 40:3 He put a new song in my mouth, a hymn of praise to our God …

Group #3: THOSE WHO LOVE TO SING BUT SOUND BAD

In these scriptures, why is it so important that we sing together?

1. To see the WHOLE Picture

Singing reaffirms that God delivers us in time of trouble

Psa. 46:1  God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble

IT IS WELL WITH MY SOUL – Words?

2. It WAKENS us to the Spirit’s Work

Music can access parts of your life that literal language cannot.

Shawshank Redemption Clip – Scene 19

Shawshank Redemption

“I have no idea to this day what those two Italian ladies were singing about. Truth is, I don’t want to know. Some things are best left unsaid. I’d like to think they were singing about something so beautiful it can’t be expressed in words, and makes your heart ache because of it … I tell you, those voices soared higher and farther than anybody in a gray place dares to dream. It was like some beautiful bird flapped into our drab little cage and made those walls dissolve away, and for the briefest of moments, every last man in Shawshank felt free.”

Ps. 91:1 He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. 2 I will say of the LORD, “He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.”

3. It Amplifies the power of WITH-NESS

The community must come together in ComeUnity.

ComeUnity Worship has a Spiritual Dynamic

Worship is a mutual submission to each other.

4. It Creates and Preserves a Sense of WONDER

What can happen when a group of believers start to sing and focus on the single word
and attribute of God: HOLY? Wonder

1Pet. 2:9   But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.

Revelation 5:6-14 – Singing is a response to the Revelation of God

Verses 9: and they sang a new song …
Sing – The Lamb is Worthy – MacAlmon

Verse 12: In a loud voice they sang:
Sing – Worthy is the Lamb – Hillsongs

Verse 13: And I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and on the sea, and all that is in them, singing …

Verse 14: The four living creatures said, “Amen,” and the elders fell down and worshiped.
