Lent 2010 - Day 11
Insignificant or Significance
By Pastor Dave Holtzhauer
Is there anything that we do that is insignificant in God's kingdom?
Have you ever been asked to do something mundane or a little chore that you thought didn't have any significance? Have you ever been asked to do something that wasn't in the public's eye but in obedience without creating a stir, did it?
I remember receiving a phone call from a student that I had been talking to for a couple of years and he wondered if we could go out and get something to eat. Now I've been out with him a lot of times before and as much as I wanted to get out of it because I had plans I told him ok and I went and picked him up. Now it seemed just like another time of eating at Jack in the Box (The southwest grilled chicken salad rocks) with him, he was telling me how everything was going in his life. So we had a good time and then we went outside to my car....
Well I remember two of Jesus disciples were asked to do something one day while they were on their way to Jerusalem. Jesus asked them to go to a village ahead of them to get a donkey.
The Triumphal Entry
28After Jesus had said this, he went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem. 29As he approached Bethphage and Bethany at the hill called the Mount of Olives, he sent two of his disciples, saying to them, 30"Go to the village ahead of you, and as you enter it, you will find a colt tied there, which no one has ever ridden. Untie it and bring it here. 31If anyone asks you, 'Why are you untying it?' tell him, 'The Lord needs it.' "32Those who were sent ahead went and found it just as he had told them. 33As they were untying the colt, its owners asked them, "Why are you untying the colt?" 34They replied, "The Lord needs it." 35They brought it to Jesus, threw their cloaks on the colt and put Jesus on it.
I wonder what was going through the minds of those two disciples as they were walking to go get the donkey? I wonder if they were saying, "What's this have to do with anything? We are missing all the action, this doesn't seem important at all. I'd rather be with Jesus than go find a donkey for him." After spending time with the Lord and seeing who he really was and all that he had said and done, I wouldn't want to leave his side thinking that I would be missing out on hearing or seeing something incredible...
As we were sitting in the parking lot of Jack in the Box, we were talking after we ate and for the first time he wanted to receive Jesus as his Lord and Savior. It totally blew me away that God was allowing me to be present with him as Jesus was revealed to him. I had no idea the significance of how all those previous times we spent together had an impact on him. What I realize is, that no matter what the Lord asks me to do and what I do in God's kingdom, it truly has significance.
Jesus' two disciples had no idea how important what they were doing was in the plan of God, from the beginning of history. They were a living a part of prophecy that was spoken hundreds of years ago by Zechariah 9:9 Rejoice greatly, O Daughter of Zion! Shout, Daughter of Jerusalem! See, your king comes to you, righteous and having salvation, gentle and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.
As you serve the Lord this Easter season, whether in front or behind the scenes, remember what you do in the kingdom of God has significance. You never know the impact you are going to have. We do it all for the Glory of God. Now we can live in anticipation of, "What are you going to do today, Lord?"
